In 2020, a Harvard-trained engineer named Yinka Ogunbiyi sat in a chair for four straight days installing her own knotless braids. Anyone who has braided hair, or sat still while someone else did it, knows exactly what those four days felt like. What made Ogunbiyi different is what she did next. She did not simply finish her hair and move on. She looked at the process and asked a question almost nobody in the beauty industry had asked with any seriousness: why has this multi-billion-dollar industry seen almost no technological innovation in a hundred years?
That question became HaloBraid, billed as the world's first braid-assist robot. Six years later, the company has raised $7 million in seed funding, attracted backing from investors including Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian's venture firm Seven Seven Six, and built a waiting list of more than 7,000 professional salons before the product has even fully launched. This is not a Silicon Valley toy. It is a serious commercial bet on an industry the tech world had ignored for decades.
An Industry Hiding in Plain Sight

Eight billion hours is not a rounding error. It is one of the largest unaddressed time burdens in any personal service industry on the planet, and until HaloBraid, it had attracted almost no serious engineering attention. That is the first lesson for any founder reading this. The biggest opportunities are rarely hiding in obscure, hard-to-reach markets. They are sitting in industries everyone has walked past because nobody paused long enough to measure the pain.

How the Robot Actually Works
HaloBraid is not designed to replace the stylist. It is built as what engineers call a "cobot," a collaborative robot that works alongside a human rather than instead of one. The stylist still sections the hair, creates the foundation knot, and handles the finishing, trimming, and styling. HaloBraid steps in for the middle stretch, the long, repetitive, physically punishing sequence of braiding motions that consumes most of a knotless braid appointment. The company says the device can cut appointment time roughly in half, with a longer-term goal of helping stylists work up to five times faster.

This design choice was deliberate, and it is the second lesson worth pulling out of this story. Ogunbiyi built HaloBraid by working closely with professional braiders rather than around them. She co-developed the device with fellow Harvard alumnus David Afolabi only after spending real time understanding what stylists actually needed protected: their craft, their income, and their relationship with clients. Technology that arrives to serve an industry, instead of conquering it, gets invited in. Technology that arrives to replace people gets resisted, sometimes rightly so.
The Money Followed the Problem, Not the Trend
It is worth sitting with the fact that HaloBraid did not raise its funding by chasing whatever venture capital found fashionable that quarter. It raised money by solving a problem so large and so well documented that investors could not ignore the math: eight billion hours, a client base that spends heavily on hair care, and zero existing competitors solving the physical strain problem at scale. The 7,000 salons on the waiting list did not sign up because of clever marketing. They signed up because every stylist among them has felt exactly the strain HaloBraid is built to reduce.
